Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a type of therapeutic massage that concentrates on realigning the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. This massage technique involves applying slow, direct, and deep pressure on muscle areas of the body that includes using long and flowing strokes to gently slip in and out of the muscles that are afflicted with pain and tension. The massage movements will alleviate pain and restore regular movement. The fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms are used during the deep tissue massage.
When a muscle area is injured, rigid and sore tissue develops in the muscles, tendons and ligaments. This tissue blocks blood circulation which results in pain, inflammation, and restricted movement. The deep tissue massage breaks the tissue down to allow the blood to regain normal circulation which helps alleviate pain and promotes healing. Deep tissue massage is used to treat a variety of conditions and focuses on a specific problem area such as sore shoulders, stiff neck, and tightness in the back. It is very helpful for such problems as: Fibromyalgia, chronic pain, muscle tension, restricted mobility, posture issues, Osteoarthritis pain, recovery from injuries such as a sports injury, and muscle spasms.
When receiving a deep tissue massage, one may feel some discomfort and after the massage session is complete, there may be some pain and stiffness, but it will subside. If the massage is so intense that increased pain is caused, it is important to immediately inform the massage therapist. It is also important to drink plenty of water prior to a deep tissue massage to help the body release toxins during the massage. These toxins, called lactic acids, build up during strenuous exercise. The overly tight muscles are unable to release the lactic acid. The lactic acid and other toxins build up in the body which is unhealthy. A deep tissue massage allows the toxins to be released naturally.
Deep tissue massage therapy is a great choice for those who want to speed up the healing process after receiving an injury. This type of therapeutic massage increases the flow of oxygen within the body, relieves tension, and loosens and gets rid of body toxins. When you have a deep tissue massage, you will feel rejuvenated, relaxed, and have more energy for a chaotic day.
